Part of the confusion stems from the fact that "sea worms" don't actually belong to a single phylum; they span several entirely different evolutionary branches, each with its own distinct behaviors and hiding spots. For anyone scanning the reef with a macro light, knowing exactly what to look for is half the battle.

Sea Worms

Flatworms (Phylum: Platyhelminthes):

These paper-thin worms are notoriously difficult to spot. Because of their vibrant colors and ruffled edges, they are constantly misidentified as sea slugs or nudibranchs. The easiest way to tell them apart is to look for the "naked gills" (the tuft of appendages on the back) and the distinct rhinophores (antennae-like structures) that define nudibranchs—flatworms lack both.

Segmented Worms (Phylum: Annelida):

Tube Worms: These are generally the easiest to find. Many segmented worms are sedentary, building and living inside hard, calcareous tubes or leathery parchment casings attached to the reef or wreck. You will often see their feathery crowns extended to filter feed, though they will rapidly retract back into their tubes at the first sign of a shadow or water displacement.
